Born in St. Louis, she was moved in New York City at the age of a mere few days. The year was 1991 when Barnard College awarded her a Bachelor's Degree in Arts History. That same year she was hired as an intern for An American Place restaurant for an entire year. Guarnaschelli got her first taste of dining experiences through watching recipes she'd written in her mother's cookbooks getting examined at her home. She started her career with Larry Forgione before working in several Los Angeles, New York and France-based establishments. She was eventually appointed the executive chef of Butter. Guarnaschelli was a competitor against Cat Cora on Food Network's Iron Chef America 2007 Farmers Market Battle. In the following years, she has appeared as a judge on the program and, in 2011, competed on The Next Iron Chef season four, where she finished third place finisher. She competed and lost in one episode of Food Network Challenge Ultimate Thanksgiving Feast. After the conclusion of The Following Iron Chef's 4th season,, she was made sous-chef for Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian. She became host of The Food Network's The Cooking Loft With Alex Guarnaschelli in 2008. There, she teaches a small group of students on how to recreate classic dishes.
